The widow of actor Alan Thicke has responded to a legal petition filed by her stepsons. She says her stepsons are trying to prevent her from receiving her rightful inheritance while they spend their father’s trust money.
The disagreement between Tanya Callau Thicke and her stepsons, Robin Thicke and Brennan Thicke, stems from a petition filed by the sons in Los Angeles Superior court in which they asked the judge to uphold the prenuptial agreement entered between Alan Thicke and his widow. Tanya Thicke, however, says that she had no plans to challenge the prenuptial agreement and that her stepsons merely filed the petition to harm her reputation.
Robin Thicke passed away last May. According to the couple’s prenuptial agreement, his widow will receive a $500,000 life insurance policy, 25 percent of the personal effects of her husband, the furniture in their ranch home, death benefits from pensions and various union memberships and 40 percent of his remaining estate.
According to Tanya Thicke’s lawyer, she does have the legal right to challenge her prenuptial agreement with Thicke because she signed it only for days prior to their marriage date and she wasn’t represented by a lawyer. Nevertheless, her lawyer stressed that she has no intention to do that.
The disagreements that have ensued among the Thicke family, tragically, are not uncommon in families following the death of a wealthy loved one. For this reason, estate planners may want to take great care to ensure their estate plans are created in a way that minimizes the threat of family infighting.
